Post Buying a castle in Oblivion
Not sure what I love more, the armour, weapons or real estate mods. I love owning my own castle, but am always less than satisfied when I take it over by killing a few brigands at the gate (i.e. Battlehorn). Or get to buy a castle for the same amount of money as a set of armour in IC. A castle has been devalued to the price of magic armour or one mini-quest. So it got me thinking, what might a castle cost in terms of real world examples. The result is a random post I presented on another board for re-examing here.

"Ok, as for property I left in the prices (L = pounds) to give a sense of what a pen & paper RPG game worked out as a reasonable pricing system. I cannot verify but I would hazard a guess that someone out there developed this based on historical. If it helps a warhorse would cost 2-1/2 pounds in this system. So I figure if an OB horse costs 5,000 gold, than a large castle should be priced at +20-million gold, an upper class house ~112,000 gold. Don't go out and bash any real estate modders just because I stumbled across a different pricing system. I would think you could go into the mod and adjust the acquisition price if it bothered you that much. One problem though with this proposed ratio. I've accumluated decent gold in OB but I have to imagine 20 million gold to pickup a castle would just become tedious in game, despite being more "realistic". If you think the base used are horses, that's 4,000 horses!!! Or 4,000 suits of daedric armour!!! That's an awful lot of scavenging. As per anything else in life, probably a happy medium out there....

Remember: 2-1/2 L (pounds) = 1 warhorse = 1 OB horse at 5,000 gold
PROPERTY:
Rural:
castle, large 10,000L (20M gold in OB)
castle, small 1,000L (2M gold)
keep, large 2,000L (4M gold)
keep, small 200L (400k gold)
manor house, stone, large 60L (120k gold)
manor house, stone, small 6L (12k gold)
mill 4L (8k gold)

Urban:
house, slum, hovel 3L (6k gold)
house, mid-class, poor 6L (12k gold)
house, mid-class, average 12L (24k gold)
house, mid-class, wealthy 20L (40k gold)
house, upper-class 28L
house&garden 40L
house, suburban 50% (outside of town wall)"

It looks very interesting Shamus. But as you said, 20 millions GP can be too realistic to get. I think you should base castle prizes on OB house's prizes:

Anvil - upper-class house - 5 000 GP (but haunted so it's a bargain prize)
Bravil - lower-class house - 4 000 GP + 3 900 furnishings it
Bruma - mid-class house - 10 000 GP + 9 900 furnishings it
Cheydinhal - mid- to upper-class - 15 000 GP + 15 000 furnishings it
Chorrol - upper-class - 20 000 GP + 19 400 furnishings it
Imperial City - lower-class - 2 000 GP + 2 000 furnishings it
Leyawiin - lower- to mid-class - 7 000 GP + 7 000 furnishings it
Skingrad - upper-class - 25 000 GP + 24 000 furnishings it

Hope it helps you in your research :)

Lalwende, my comparison is an overlay from the "real world" for potential use in OB by modders. Thanks for the info, interestingly prior to furnishings many of the house prices roughly correspond to my list.

I cannot recall exact details but seems to me I have hundreds of thousands of GP, especialyl returning from OB Gates, althougjh I cheat and use a bag of holding which lets me loot everything literally for resale. Same for dungeon crawls. Maybe if I didn't cheat buying those houses and castles at current vanilla pricing would mean more to me. ;)

yay for bag of holding!

The first few levels you start out dirt poor, but after a while, you always end up with more gold than you know what to do with. I don't think this is entirely dependent on using the BoH. Although the BoH probably does speed this state up a little bit.

Install a mod like "merchants, more money", then you get more money for your stuff, if you sell it.

Another tip: do you haggle with the merchants you barter with? I always try to do.
Actually I use the Illusion school of magic to force my selling prices up.

Usually this is enough time to start bartering. Additional bonus during haggling, their disposition does not lower, if you go to high while haggling. ;)

Yes, I always haggle. But once you get all Battlehorn upgrades that merchant has a 100% disposition. And I change the barter gold. But you're right, I should try that mod or soemthing like it.

biulding, not sure why you are poor, even at high levels? I could lend you some GP but my rates are fairly steep. ;)
