Post Blocking
With Vanilla blocking, is it more effective if you have the crosshairs near/on the weapon coming at you ?

Asking cause I happend to notice that effect recently.

Im pretty sure its the case, just one more case of how bethesda lied about this being an RPG (PCs block skill should be what matters, not the players ability to play)

Post Re: Blocking
In first person view this somehow makes sense, but how is this done in 3rd person view then?
It's seems to me it's a lot harder to do then.

Yeah, you need a GUI mod to have a crosshair in 3rd person view.

TBH it depending on the player at all makes no sense. Should be 100% automated.

Hell, NOTHING in combat should directly depend on the player in any game that claims to be an RPG (aside from overall strategy)

Post Re: Blocking
I don't get it. For the player character to block, the gamer has to activate blocking. When blocking, the on-screen character raises their shield/arm/2-handed weapon in front of them. Thus if the player character isn't actually facing the approaching weapon-attack, their block would be worthless. So it stands to reason that the more head-on from the front the blow is (somewhere around the crosshair) the more effective a block would be to counter the blow.

Exactly. It's labeld as an RPG, it SHOULD be based more on the stats than the players skill.

Maybe I should check oblivion .iso for a manual, lol.

Post Re: Blocking
So what your saying, is the player shouldn't have to block to gain the benefits of blocking? Doesn't that rather break immersion? Surely it's closer to role-play if you only benefit from blocking if you the gamer initiates the block? Or am I not understanding what you're saying?

Post Re: Blocking
Blocking should only depend on the PC insofar as you hit the block button.

Past that, it should be up to the PCs stats as what happens, and autoattempt to block anything heading in at you, as long as your facing it and/or aware of it.

A shield, highest chance to block it, but foward only.

A sword, blocking should be tied into your blade skill somewhat, you can also block sides and rear (but with lower chances for the sides, and much lower for the back)

A Bow should work just like blocking when unarmed, and offer minimal protection.

Remember, its supposed to be a RPG (not that bethsoft knows what that really means). That means that PC skill > Player skill as much as possible.

Post Re: Blocking
Aren't you confused with the old method of blocking that was used in Morrowind?
In there blocking was not skill-based and was totally chance dependant.

Nowadays in Oblivion blocking is actively determined by the user pressing the block-key.
I don't know if there is any chance related or location based impact zone on the NPC and shield.
But I know it's is better now than it was. ;)

There are mods that adjust this. Duke Patrick's come to mind. :)

I think block is depending on the stats... The higher the stats, the more benefits player gets from using it.

Yeah, the higher the chance it'll work.

If the players pointed in the right direction.
