Post Various CTDs in Oblivion Discussion
Kosh has mentioned some CTDs in another thread and pointed out the importance of RAM.
Link to his thread: It is the third post down.
post9978.html#p9978

With my old computer and only 1g of RAM I had a lot of problems with CTDs. With my new HP 64bit, 8Gs of RAM I have found that I have very few random CTDs as those appear to be related to OS setups and Graphics which I am still trying to get configured.

I do have an occasionally CTD when exciting directly to the desktop. Windows 7 has given message that I need to upgrade to a newer version of Oblivion. I have the newest version of Oblivion so for some reason Windows does not recognize this and is not consistent. I do have a problem of not being able to exit from the game to the Main Menus. It crashes to the desktop and Windows 7 has not given my any message as to why.

At the moment I have only about 50 mods installed. By the time I finish my installation I will have about 100. Not many compared to many other players.

There are various reasons for random CTDs. I do think the amount of RAM plays a big part but is not the only reason. I am sure that any thoughts, experiences, solutions would be of help to people.,

There is a solution/workaround for your menu-exit problem Nakia:
The one I am using is called "Fast Exit", check the Nexus: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410
I think it relies on O.B.S.E. though. Yep, v16!
Choose version 2, this is the latest.

The big problem is, there can be various reasons that can cause a CTD in Oblivion, alas.
Some of them are (not in any particular order):

- Missing esm/esp files.
- Shader-file(s) missing.
- Corrupt/buggy mods and from there on it gets even into the savegames, like a virus that infects it.(Disabling/removing the mods does not help in that case).
- Running low on System- or even VideoRAM.
- Two or more mods that edit the same worldspace.

There maybe even more reasons.

That's what makes it so hard to troubleshoot such a problem.

Thank you, Ronin, I'll checck out the fast exit mod. You mention the savegame corruption. I have had actually go so far as to corrupt the installation itself and had to reinstall. Not sure if that is a mod corrupting the worldspace or what but starting a new game doesn't help.

no worries there nak :)

as for kosh crash list...

ai packages kosh... if there is a location or target missing it will crash.. like in new haven and legend of kor... there was one package (out of nearly 2000 in new haven and about 20 in legend of kor...) and it could be any of them that wen bad...

i understand a bit more about what makes a bad package now as i did then... wen working through legend of kor (which got twenty new ai pacakges because of the issue ;) ) at the time i thought the only fix was to delete all possible cuases and rebuild form the ground up... but now i know its the target and locations that cuase it to crash....

also if the package cant get to its destination... it will ctd from time to time....

as for saves and curption... seems my aleyid sorceror is curpted down to the core... all the saves seem to have gone bad... so that is a pitty...

now as for curupting instalations... that comes form intalling more mods than your comp can handle... i did that alot with the LAB 2000 (my first computer i actuly serisouly played oblivion on) back in 06... the LAB I, (which was the preivous just with new parts) ran nearly 100+ without curpting its install but then again it had the parts required to run oblivion (recomend parts) and not the minimum parts (like it did before it was upgraded)

LAB 2000 was named that becuase it was built around 2000 :P lol 34 gig hard drive!!! haha
